The Sacred Heart University Pioneers kicked off their fall season in winning fashion, sweeping a doubleheader from the University of Rhode Island, Saturday. The Pioneers jumped out to an 11-1 lead in Game 1 when Kyle Unger, Michael Goff, Connor Miller, and Mike O’Brien all scored twice in the first two innings. O’Brien was 3-3 with two RBI in the game. PJ Ciocca, Unger and Miller each drove in two as well. URI fought back closing the gap to 11-6, but strong relief pitching from Brenden Berger, who struck out four in two innings of work, and Miller, who struck out five in the same span, sealed the victory for the Pioneers. Final score: 14-10.
The Pioneers hot hitting continued in the first inning of Game 2 as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead to support veteran lefty, Cody Campson. Campson took control on the mound as he fanned six and gave up just one hit over three innings. Middle infielders Justin Squarzini and David Esposito each had two hits and two runs at the top of the lineup. Pat Jackson added another run in the 5th with a no-doubt homerun to dead centerfield. Justin Lauer picked up the save in two scoreless innings of relief, striking out three. Sacred Heart takes Game 2 by a score of 6-4.
