Ray Mencio - Director of Club Sports
Ray graduated from Sacred Heart in 2005 with a B.S. in Finance and a minor in sport management. While serving as a Graduate Assistant in Student Life he received his MBA while graduating in 2007. In 2008, Ray was appointed as the first director of Club Sports in Sacred Heart history. The program grew rapidly under Ray growing from 175 students to over 800 since its inception. There have been the addition of 20 new sports since 2008 and the level of competition has grown dramatically. Teams have competed all across the country and some have even competed internationally. Ray served as the men’s club basketball coach from 2008-2015 and during that time the team competed in various NIRSA sponsored tournaments as well as against many of the top Community Colleges, Prep Schools and Junior Colleges in the northeast. In 2010, Ray assumed the role of Head Coach for the Club Softball team and has led the team to a World Series appearance in 2014, as well as three straight New England Regional appearances. Ray also assumed the role of Head Coach for the Women’s Club Basketball team in 2015. In his first year the team won their first ever NIRSA Regional tournament game and looks to continue to grow the program.
Greg Jones - Assistant Director of Club Sports
Greg graduated from Sacred Heart in 2010 with a B.S. in Sports Management. Originally from Westborough, MA, Greg arrived to campus in the fall of 2006 after being recruited to play for the Division 1 football program here at Sacred Heart. After suffering a knee injury that limited him to 8 games, he joined the varsity coaching staff as a student assistant his senior year. Upon graduation, he joined the staff full time as the graduate defensive assistant in 2011, and then as the safety’s coach the following four years working closely with current Defensive Coordinator Dave Wissman and former secondary coach Bryan Butterworth, who is currently the secondary coach at Campbell University. Greg helped assist a defense that was a top ranked defense nationally and led the nation in turnover ratio. Greg was also part of the coaching staff when the Pioneers won back to back NEC Championships, and played in their first two FCS Playoff games ever. He joined the club sports staff in the spring of 2015, at which point he was also named Head Club Football Coach. In their inaugural season, the Club Pioneers won the North Atlantic Conference Championship with a 7-2 record overall and took on Miami (OH) in the NCFA (National Club Football Association) National Semi-Final. Greg and the Club Football program will look to improve on their first year of success while continuing to grow a second successful football program on Sacred Heart’s campus.
