Club Football Starts Season 1-1 in Exhibition Games

Faifield, CT - The Pioneer Club Football team started their season 1-1 after two non-conference exhibition games. They kicked off their season with a matchup against Sprint Football member Mansfield University in Mansfield, PA. The matchup was a good kick start to the season for both teams, with both preparing for their respective seasons.

After a scoreless first quarter that didn't see too much action, aside from a Mark Barranger interception, Mansfield scored first, beating the Pioneers secondary for a quick score. The Pioneers missed a field goal on the next possession that gave the Mounties great field position. A coverage mixup again allowed the Mounties to score, which gave them a quick 14-0 lead. The Pioneers Kicker Matt Lawrence, closed out the half with a 41 yard field goal to make it 14-3 heading into half time.

The second half was not more forgiving, with more coverage breakdowns and blown plays late in the half. A late carry by Sophomore QB Mike Contento made the score 20-10 at the end of the third. The Mounties put another touchdown on the board late in the 4th to put them up 26-10 and which ended up being the final score.

This past weekend, the Pioneers played the MHC Green Wave for the second consecutive season. This time, they shared the day with the X-Men Rugby team for the first two team doubleheader of the year. The Pioneers started out hot with Senior Captain WR/S Mark Barranger making a circus catch in the endzone for the games first touchdown. The Pioneer defense had a tough assignment, trying to corral the Green Wave QB, but they prevailed forcing punts throughout the day. Junior LB Dalvyn Charles and Junior DE Mark Threlkeld each had defensive touchdowns. Threlkeld returned a fumble by the Green Wave's QB 39 yards for the second score of the day, while Charles ripped the ball out of the running back's hands and raced 75 yards for the third touchdown of the game.

Sophomore QB Mike Contento threw for two touchdowns on the day, one to the aforemetioned Mark Barranger and another to Sophomore WR Anthony DeSimone. Contento worked his way out of the pocket, scrambled to his left and threw a perfect strike downfield to a wide open DeSimone who walked in for the touchdown. Sophomore Running Back Brian Sander lead the way in the backfield, rushing for over 90 yards in the win. Sophomore Kicker Matt Lawrence went 3 for 4 on extra points and also hit a field goal in the win.
