South Burlington, Vt. - This past Saturday, the club football team traveled up to South Burlington, VT to take on the Catamounts of the University of Vermont. The in-conference rival dealt the Pioneers their first ever loss in club football history two years ago. However, this past weekend the Pioneers took control of the game early and won decisively by a score of 41-7. Senior Quarterback/Safety Chris Criscuolo threw for over 250 yards and for 4 touchdowns with Junior WR/S Mark Barranger catching 2 of those touchdowns. Barranger also led the Pioneer defense with 2 interceptions and 5 tackles, while the defensive line led by Seniors Brian Moore, Rory McKane and Anthony Bentivegna carried the defense that held the Catamounts to less than 30 yards rushing.
The Pioneers controlled and maintained momentum from the start of the game when Sophomore AJ Hoy took the opening kickoff back 90 yards for a score. Its the fastest touchdown in SHU Club Football history at 11 second into the game. Hoy’s return is also the second longest, only behind Senior Curtis Sutherland’s return in 2015 when he returned a kickoff 95 yards for a TD against ECSU in the final game of the season.
The Pioneers forced a quick 3 and out defensively and forced UVM to punt. The ensuing drive as no different than the opening kickoff when Criscuolo found Barranger for their first score of the season. Criscuolo found Junior Mike Lewis for a 22 yard TD later on in the first. Sophomore Dalvyn Charles found his way into the end zone in the 2nd quarter with his first rushing touchdown of the season, this one from 5 yards out. The half ended with the Pioneers forcing a long field goal by UVM that went wide right.
Second half momentum continued for the Pioneers when Criscuolo found Barranger down the home sideline for a 78 yard td pass midway through the 3rd quarter. The Catamounts followed with a drive of their own, aided by several Pioneer penalties, capped QB Kyle Morand hit WR Ryan Augustine in the back corner of the end zone for UVM’s first and only score of the game. Criscuolo found Senior Captain Curtis Sutherland for a 54 yard touchdown to close out the 3rd quarter and was the games final score. Barranger closed the game out, intercepting a Morand pass in the games final minutes.
