Fairfield, CT- Ice Hockey took home a win a loss this weekend at home, beating Army 3-2 on Friday and losing to RPI 4-1 on Saturday night. Both games were Super East matchups for the team and count towards their standing in the conference.
On Friday, the Pioneers welcomed USMA West Point to Wonderland of Ice for a Super East matchup. This marked the first meeting between the teams since Army joined the conference this season. For the second week in a row, SHU scored in the first 2 minutes of the game when senior Jack Pardue picked up his 7th goal of the season off an assist from freshman Connor Szambel. In the second period, SHU added their second and third goals from seniors Vinny Perez and Frank Vetere, respectively, before Army picked up their first goal of the game on a power play. Army tried to forge a comeback with a goal 14 minutes into the third period, but it was too little too late as the Pioneer defense secured the win.
Saturday, SHU played RPI in another conference matchup. RPI got a quick start, putting up 2 goals and shutting out the Pioneers in the first period to go up 2-0. SHU was able to reverse the trend in the second, keeping the Engineers off the scoreboard. Senior Brandon Asgeirsson scored his first goal off an assist from sophomore Mike Zdanowicz, pulling the Pioneers within one. RPI proved too tough in the third, tacking on 2 more for a final score of 4-1.
The Pioneers hit the road this weekend of a 3 SECHL games, featuring rematches with both Army and RPI. The team travels to West Point on Friday night before trekking to Albany, NY for games against Siena College on Saturday and RPI on Sunday.
