Men’s rugby opened their conference season with a 44-5 win over Union College at Campus Field on Sunday. This brings their win streak against conference opponents to 9, dating back to last season.
SHU was first to score when sophomore lock Kenny Ekert gave the Xmen their first try of the season. Sacred Heart added another try, bringing the score to 10-0 before Union touched down in the try zone with 11 minutes left in the first half. Sophomore center Jack Connelly and senior flyhalf Mike Vozzella each scored and junior John Scala nailed a conversion to end the half 22-5.
Scrumhalf Ellis Badger added his second try of the game just 40 seconds into the half, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Sacred Heart didn’t allow another point in the game before adding 3 more tries of their own. Fullback Connor McCutcheon scored a try and a conversion and freshman hooker Aaron Such got the first try of his collegiate career. Senior prop Joe Cutrone punctuated the win with a final Xmen try with 45 seconds remaining in the game.
Sacred Heart men’s rugby is currently ranked #11 nationally among Division II teams by Goff Rugby Report. Their next game will be this Sunday, October 1st at Hofstra University. Kickoff will be at 1pm.
