Sailing Finishes 3rd at Tyrell Trophy

Groton, CT-  A strong performance on the water by the team of Aleix Monamany ('23) and Wynn Simmons ('21) in "B" Division helped the SHU Sailing Team continue to improve their overall regatta results with a 3rd place overall finish at the Tyrell Trophy held at UConn-Avery Point this Sunday. Though very light breezes greeted the 7 teams at Avery Point, patience prevailed as a pleasant 5-8 mph southeasterly breeze filled just near noon allowing 5 races to be completed for both divisions.

Aleix and Wynn boasted an impressive scoreline of 3,1,1,2,3 to finish 2nd in "B" Division. "A" Division team of Brian Hayes Jr. ('21) and Laura Scheidler ('21) found themselves playing catchup as the first race, run in nearly no wind, caught them on the wrong side of the race course and some on water penalties, including a foul while in 2nd place in race 3, and an early start in race 4, which led to restarting last, cost the team several top 3 finishes. The final race saw Hayes/Scheidler back in form as they finished overlapped with regatta champion Tufts for their best finish of their, very challenging, day.

Monamany, from Spain and new to the team this semester, observed the advantages of sailing in "B" Division and getting to the race course in the second rotation. Alex noted, "We were able to watch "A" division sail their races and saw trends on the course that helped Wynn and I develop a strategy and game plan. This really helped set up to make certain we were in the proper spot off the start and going to the favored side of the race course".

SHU Sailing is hosting the Priddy Freshman Championships this coming Saturday, April 13th at Captains Cove Seaport starting at 930am. The racing can be viewed from the bluffs at St. Mary's-by-the-Sea in Black Rock for free!. SHU plans to have one team competing for the Priddy Trophy.
