Fairfield, CT- On November 10th, the club softball team took on Hofstra University in a three conference series. Coming into the series, both Hofstra and Sacred Heart were tied for first place in the NCSA North Atlantic-North Conference. In the first game of the series, Hofstra came out on top, taking the first one 19-5. After a devastating loss in Game 1, Head Coach Ray Mencio was asked what his game plan was for the second and third game. Ray simply replied, “We have to go out there and play our game, when we play the way I know we can, we are unstoppable!” Boy, was Coach Ray right, Sacred Heart came out in the second game swinging! Sacred Heart crushed Hofstra 13-2, evening the series at 1-1. After a dominate performance in Game 2, the Pioneers didn’t let up in Game 3. Game 3 came down to the wire when Hofstra had runners on base in the top of the 7th inning while the Pioneers were leading by 1 run. However, Daniela Miceli shut the Hofstra offense down, and Sacred Heart won the third game 3-2. Sacred Heart University came out on top, taking 2 of the 3 game series.
After winning the series to Hofstra University on Saturday, the following day consisted of the biggest series to date. The club softball team traveled to Amherst, MA to face UMass-Amherst at their home field. The Pioneers may have been a bit fatigued from the bus ride as they did not look like the same dominating team that they displayed the previous day. UMass came out fighting, and ended up winning the first game 8-1. Coming into this series, the Pioneers knew that they needed to win at least one game in order to secure first place in the NCSA North Atlantic-North Conference to qualify for Regionals in Danville, PA. The team regrouped on their own in between games, and they were ready to fight. Unfortunately, the Pioneers came up short against the feisty UMass-Amherst squad. The Pioneers ended up losing the last two games of the series, losing 8-7 and 6-3.
The club softball season is not over yet though, there are still more spring games to be played! Check back here for an updated schedule in February. On behalf of the club softball team and staff, thank you all for your continued support!
