Fairfield, CT- The Sacred Heart Club Baseball team continued their hot play this weekend as they defeated in state and conference rival UConn on Sunday. With the win the Pioneers improved to 7-5 in conference and 12-5 overall. They also handed UConn its first conference loss of the season.
Freshman ace Patrick Kannaley got the start and allowed five runs (three earned) while striking out five in six innings of work. Senior Reinaldo Jackson relieved Kannaley for the last three innings. He did not allow a run and surrendered one walk and one hit while striking out four. The Pioneers offense got off to a late start not scoring their first run until the third innings. Down for the majority of the game the Pioneers were able to force UConn starter out of the game and took advantage of the Huskies bullpen in the sixth inning. The Pioneers took their first lead of the game in the bottom half of the sixth inning when Senior Justin Squarzini hit a two run RBI single into the outfield gap. Sophomore Bradley Zsampar then knocked in another Pioneer with his own single.
The club boy’s would than add two more insurance runs in the seventh inning when Freshman Peter Minore hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield and Senior Justin Squarzini hit another RBI single. Squarzini would end the day four for four with three RBI’s and two runs.
The Pioneers will head to Long Island, NY next weekend as they take on a non-conference opponent Stony Brook University on Saturday April 13th. The Pioneers and Seawolves meet for the second time this year as the Pioneers took both games in Bridgeport, CT by the scores of 6-2 and 3-1.
