Club Sports Announces Addition of Four New Sports for '19-'20

Fairfield, CT – Director of Club Sports Ray Mencio announced the addition of four new sports for the upcoming fall semester. The new sports, depending on interest from the student body, will start play in the fall semester of 2019. The new sports include the Spirit squad, which will cheer at the varsity hockey games and the club football games, Club Rock Climbing, Club Dodgeball and finally Badminton. The Spirit Squad, which was introduced this past week, will be a non-competition team that will mainly cheer on the sideline for the Club Football team and the D1 Varsity hockey teams games at Webster Bank Arena. The goal is for tryouts to be announced this month, with the expectation that the squad will debut this fall! A more detailed article will be coming out later this week about the spirit so please stay tuned!

Club Rock Climbing Is a sport that the Club Sports Department has long been looking forward to introducing because of the new facility that will be opening this fall. The Bobby Valentine Health and Recreation Center is to open this August for all undergraduate and graduate students. One of the main focal points of the building, is the two story climbing wall which will allow the department to add a Club Rock Climbing team.

In addition, the department will also be adding Badminton to the list of new sports with the new added space (additional gym) to campus. Badminton has long been pushed a sport, but was continuously put on hold due to the lack of space but given its popularity in recent years, the addition of the sport made sense to the undergraduate community.

The last sport that will be added this fall, barring some unexpected change of plans, is Club Dodgeball. The recent success that the NCDA (National Club Dodgeball Association) has had across the country made its way to the Northeast. Sacred Heart is looking to become one of the first members from the Northeast region to the league. The Club Sports department will look to see how much interest there is from the student body to see if they will be able to field a team for the 2019-2020 season.
