Figure Skating Makes SHU History By Taking Third Place At Cornell Challenge Cup

Ithaca, NY- 

This past weekend the SHU Figure Skating (SHUFS) team traveled to Cornell University to compete in the Cornell Challenge Cup. The team started day one of the competition strong. Freshman Elise Jolie and Sophomore, Funmi Joseph both earned points for the SHUFS! In Excel Intermediate Free Skate was Senior, Ruby Jusas, who placed third, and Freshman, Erin Regan, who placed fourth. Also placing 3rd was Kailey Murphy, a Junior who competed in Excel Juvenile, with Sophomore, Lauren Weinstein placing 5th. The pioneers ended the day on a high note with two Sophomores in the Excel Novice Free Skate, Alanna Kubik, who placed first and Victoria Huggan, who placed 5th!

Carrying the momentum from day one of competition to day two, was Junior Genna Cyper who took the ice first for the Pioneers and won the Excel Junior Free Skate event! In her second event of the day, Alanna placed 2nd in the Novice short program and earned a total of 13 points overall for the weekend. Also skating a Novice short was Victoria, who’s performance put a smile to everyone’s face including hers as the routine earned her 4th place. Senior Tessa Peredy came up big for her team earning a total of 16 points, as she came in first place in both of her dance events (Preliminary and Juvenile Dance). Adding 10 more points to the SHUFS total was Senior, Amanda Witkowski. Another Senior who helped contribute to the team’s total points was Juliet Melotto. Juliet earned a total of 13 points for the team after placing 3rd in the Gold Pattern Dance and taking 1st in the International Pattern Dance event. Ruby and Erin gained 6 points in the Intermediate Ladies Short Program event on day two. Making her debut for the SHUFS was Freshman Natalie Castelli, who placed 5th in the Novice short program. Sophomore Holly Steckert earned second place in Novice Pattern Dance on day two as well. Going into the final two events of the day, Team Maneuvers, the Pioneers were tied for 2nd place!

After two days of competition, The Sacred Heart Figure Skating Team earned a total of 99 points and came in 3rd place overall! Co-Presidents Juliet Melotto and Amanda Witkowski were extremely proud of how their team performed and look forward to carrying this success into their future competitions stating, “The excitement from this weekend has already sparked the hard work, determination and goal setting for our next competition! It is going to be a fantastic year!” This was the first time in SHU Club Figure Skating history that the team placed in a qualifying event.
