Dover, NH- SHU ice hockey opened their conference season this weekend with road games at University of New Hampshire and Bryant University.
SHU opened play on Friday, October 4th with a trip up to New Hampshire to take on the Wildcats. The Pioneers opened strong against the defending SECHL champions, scoring the first 2 goals of the game. UNH picked up one just before the end of the first, giving SHU the lead going into the first intermission. After a scoreless second for both teams, SHU looked poised for the win. However, UNH was able to pick up 2 power play goals in the second half of the period sending SHU home with a 3-2 loss.
SHU looked to bounce back on Sunday with a game at Bryant University. After getting out to an early lead, the score was still 2-1 going into the third period. After some great play by goaltender Ryan Dowds and senior Vinny Perez on the penalty kill to shut down Bryant, SHU was able to tack on 2 more to walk away with a Pioneer victory 4-1.
It was a weekend of firsts for the Pioneers, with freshmen Nate Donaldson and Drew Galea and sophomore Vince Loffredo all picking up their first collegiate goals. Sophomore Ryan Dowds picked up the win against Bryant in his first collegiate start in goal.
SHU hosts their first home game of the season this coming Saturday October 12th at 8pm against Westfield State. All Pioneer home games are played at Wonderland of Ice 123 Glenwood Ave Bridgeport, CT.
